TEAM | THE IBA OFFICE
The office is the IBA’s face. It issues call for projects, examines the proposals submitted, and supports their implementation. It represents the IBA in public, through networks from local to international level, and spins its own web of experts, supporters and partners.
- Prof. Michael Braum | Director
Studied Urban Planning and Design at the Berlin Technical University (TU). He was subsequently a Research Associate in the Urban Design and Urban Development section at the TU in Berlin, a member of the staff and partner of the Freie Planungsgruppe Berlin, a co-founder and partner of conradi, braum & bockhorst, and then set up his own studio (mbup_stadtarchitekturlandschaft). Since 1998 he has been full professor at Leibniz University in Hanover. He is a member of the Association of German Architects (BDA), the German Academy of Urban development and Regional Planning (DASL), and the Professional Association of Urban and Regional Planners (SRL). He has published widely on urban development and building culture. From 2008 to 2013 was the first Chairman of the Federal Foundation of Baukultur.
- Carl Zillich | Curatorial Director
Studied Architecture and Urban Planning in Kassel and at Columbia University in New York. For six years he was lecturer and researcher for architectural history and theory at Leibniz University in Hanover. He practiced as an architect for ten years in Berlin and is an extraordinary member of the the German Association of Archiects BDA. In publications and juries, as a visiting critic and speaker in Europa and North America he addresses the interface between theory and practice of the built environment. Befor being appointed as Curatorial Director of IBA Heidelberg he was for five years Senior Researcher at the Federal Foundation of Baukultur.
- Dr. Morticia Zschiesche | Project Leader Fundraising / External Funds
Studied Journalism and Theater, Film & Television at the Free University of Berlin and completed a doctorate in Sociology at the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg. She is a trained specialist in corporate cultural responsibility and scientific evaluations. Following various posts in PR with DaimlerChrysler Services (debis), SAT.1 ONLINE and the agency TBWA PR Querverbindungen, she worked as project manager for Lakeside Interiors, in the Technoseum in Mannheim and for the pilot project of the State of Baden Wuerttemberg Ministry for Labor and Social Welfare entitled “Project for Civic Commitment!” She most recently headed up sponsoring / creative partnership department for the National Theater in Mannheim.
- Franziska Bettac | Project Leader
Studied Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Stuttgart and at ensam in Montpellier, France, followed by positions with various companies in Stuttgart, Paris and Beijing. She worked as a freelance editor with the architectural publisher AIT/GKT for five years, while also completing the Masters’ program “ecm – educating/curating/managing” at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria. She runs the “Ebene 0” art and project space in Stuttgart.
- Moritz Bellers | Project Leader
Studied Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at Leibniz University in Hannover and Landscape Architecture at Wageningen University WUR/Netherlands. From 2000 92,011 he worked for Urbane Gestalt, landscape architects in Cologne. In 2010 to 2016 he was research assistant at the Institute of Landscape Planning and Ecology at Stuttgart University. From 2011 he was a member of the research group Living Plant Constructions or Baubotanik (IGMA) at Stuttgart University, and from 2013 has been active in STUDIO URBANE LANDSCHAFTEN. The STUDIO is an interdisciplinary network for work in the perception, design and planning of urban landscapes.
- Merle Plachta | Press and Public Relations
Studied German and Cultural Studies at the University of Münster while working for various editorial offices and publishers in Münster, Sydney and New York. She then went on to work for the Goethe Institute in New Delhi, the German Embassy to the Philippines and the Hamburg State Cultural Office. After completing her Masters degree “KMM – Culture and Media Management” at the Academy for Music and Theatre in Hamburg, she worked as cultural programme coordinator at the Goethe Centre in Hyderabad, India.
- Djamila Rerbal | Administration
Commercial expert, 22 years experience in sales and distribution, C. Josef Lamy GmbH. She most recently worked for Healthcare at Home in the international customer care department. Native speaker French and alongside German also speaks English and Arabic.
- Wolfgang Kaehler | Administration/Finance
Born in Heidelberg. Graduated from the University of Applied Sciences (FH) in Kehl with a degree in Public Administration. Has worked for the Heidelberg Department of Administration since 1976.

Studies Geography at Heidelberg University, with Urban Development and German philology as minor subjects.
- Hanne Rung
Studied Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Stuttgart and at FAUP in Porto, Portugal, followed by 5 years working as a freelance editor and art director for i.a. „frei 04 publizistik” and several magazines of the „konradin Mediengruppe“, like db-deutsche bauzeitung. She was co responsible for public relations at „Auer & Weber Assoziierte“ in Stuttgart, before running communications for „03 Architekten“ in Munich, with special focus on architectural exhibitions, like „Images Construct Images“ at Architektur Galerie Berlin. From 2011 until 2012 she was part of the „Kunstareal München“ project management team at the TU Munich Chair for Urban Design and Regional Planning. In 2012 she joined the management team of the Department of Architecture at the TU Munich as Head of Communication. Since 2016, Hanne Rung is part of the Bavarian Architecture Association as an urban planner. For IBA she is responsible as a freelance project leader for the Interim Presentation 2018.
