Exemplary projects

The IBA in Heidelberg is also a learning project. We will be inviting architects and urban planners to our IBA_LAB events series who have set international standards in architecture for educational and research establishments. We are in close contact with other IBAs, for example the one in Hamburg, which – concluded in 2013 – though numerous projects was also committed to good schools, nurseries, and research facilities. Here we present a selection of examples which we consider exemplary, with regard to the challenges Heidelberg faces as well.

Campus & MetaForum, Eindhoven

Until 2020, in a conversion project that respects the existing buildings, the 1950s campus at Eindhoven Technical University will be transformed into a “Living Lab”, in which, for example, smart mobility, healthy living, and energy-efficient construction will be tested.

Centro Cultural Teresa Pàmies, Barcelona

The Rahola Vidal studio completed the Teresia Pàmies Cultural Center in Barcelona in 2011. Integrated in the block and extending over nine stories, the building houses a library, play areas, further education center, crèche, and a multifunctional auditorium.

Educational Architecture

Together with education, architecture and administration experts, the Montag Foundations, which are based in Bonn, compile contents and materials which play a role in the future-oriented development and structure of schools and education providers.

Masterplan ETHZ-Hönggerberg, Zürich

This involves breathing new life into a mono-functional university campus dating from the 1960s and make the ETH campus a “Science City”. The master plan aims to make the campus more attractive and as such more competitive in comparison with international universities.

The Open Wijk School De Combinatie in Visslingen is a prime example of how to combine different facilities in a fragmented building.

The Baupiloten

Initiated by Susanne Hofmann in 2003, “The Baupiloten” is a practice-oriented academic reform project which involves students and users working together to create atmospheric classrooms suitable for children.

Trumpf corporate campus, Ditzingen

In the mid-1990s Barkow Leibinger Architekten drew up a master plan for the restructuring and expansion of the site on which the sheet metal fabrication company Trump stands, which it implemented in the following years.

Zernike, Groningen + Leerpark, Dordrecht

The existing university campus Zernike in Groningen was restructured on the basis of a master plan. The focus of the landscape architecture concept was on car-free, park like spaces, expressive, distinctive architecture and a system of paths that facilitates orientation and access to buildings.
