Open Wijk School De Combinatie, Vlissingen

The Open Wijk School De Combinatie in Visslingen is a prime example of how to combine different facilities in a fragmented building. The complex houses three separately funded elementary schools, a crèche, a welfare center with a parent and child center, play areas, and a sports hall. On the upper stories 38 subsidized apartments for senior citizens, and a communal roof garden were built. In the middle the architecture, (the footprint features two overlapping circles) repeatedly provides central communal zones and meeting points. Despite a limited budget, an intelligent combination of facilities produced a building that is busy round the clock and which has emerged as the new district center.
