CALL FOR PROJECTS

Do you have a special idea for Heidelberg under the motto “Knowledge | Based | Urbanism”? As we head towards the knowledge city of the future, you are cordially invited to submit your idea for an IBA project to the IBA office.

IBA projects need to demonstrate a high level of quality: They must contribute to the greater good of the city. They should enrich their environments. They should serve as an example for others, as they tread unknown ground. Not all projects have to aim for a building to be erected. The experimental structures of a project should, however, continue to have an impact even after the IBA.

Following the IBA Call for Projects in the fall of 2013, the Board of Trustees now meets twice a year to discuss submitted applications.

FIVE CRITERIA FOR AN IBA PROJECT

1 | SOCIAL RELEVANCE

The project should be committed to the common good and based on the idea of a city in which various lifestyles coexist. Openness towards the heterogeneous fabric of civic society is expressly part of the project’s innovative approach.

2 | ABOVE-AVERAGE EXPERTISE

The project should always strive to achieve the best possible solution. In order to achieve an outstanding design and structure, during the development stage of the project extraordinary expertise should be brought to bear, for example through international architectural competitions that also incorporate user interests.

3 | EXEMPLARY CHARACTER

The project should be extraordinary and thus represent a prototype that can be presented and exhibited. Its innovative approach should prove effective on site, and should become a model for further projects spanning years and trends.

4 | STRUCTURAL EFFECTIVENESS

Through its development and the approach to both design and content, the project should make a notable contribution to structurally improving its surroundings. The project should have the potential to help shape the identity of the relevant district or urban space.

5 | POLYVALENCE

The project should have the potential for additional uses other than the purpose for which it was originally intended. Given its “multi-talented” nature, it should meet the challenges of today’s complex urban society.

FORMAL REQUIREMENTS OF YOUR APPLICATION

▸ The project outline submitted should paint a comprehensive picture of the project idea with reference to IBA themes and the local context and at the same time demonstrate consideration of the abovementioned criteria. Alongside an outline of the project idea, the documents should offer impressions of possible support concepts as well as initial financial considerations.

▸ At the point of application, the project should not be conclusively planned, so that the focus on the theme of “Knowledge | Based | Urbanism” and the IBA quality standards can then be further developed jointly.

▸ We recommend a maximum of four A4 sides for the comprehensive project description. The documents should be submitted as printed papers and digitally in PDF format (drawings/illustrations 150-300 dpi) and cannot be returned.
