»A showcase for the sciences, the new Imaging Center will create a connection between research, society and nature through its urbanistic gesture.«
IBA advisory board

The EMBL is Europe’s leading research institute in the life sciences, supported by more than twenty EU member states. It stands for excellent basic research, technology transfer, training and services for researchers. Imaging is a key technology that allows scientists to investigate the molecular machinery of life and the causes of diseases. The EMBL is building an »imaging center« to make electro-microscopic and light microscopic methods available to research and industry as quickly as possible. It will provide EMBL researchers and up to 300 guest researchers annually with access to imaging technologies. A visitor center will present their potential to lay people.

The building will provide technology platforms with sensitive scientific equipment, sample preparation laboratories, training rooms, offices for technical and service staff and IT infrastructure for data evaluation.

The structural development was prepared in cooperation with the city of Heidelberg and developed in a competition in 2016. The Heidelberg-based architect Johannes Gerstner was able to win against renowned competitors. The entrance areas of his design are characterized by transparency and openness. Flexibly-shielded areas ensure privacy for the occupants. The open, bright architecture, the visitor center, and the location on a campus with a park-like forest will make the EMBL Imaging Center an attractive meeting place for researchers from all over the world as well as for the citizens of Heidelberg.
