Office

IBA Heidelberg is a municipal limited liability company. The IBA team advises and supports institutions or civil groups that want to implement urban planning or architectural projects for the knowledge-based society.

Prof. Michael Braum, Executive Director

Studied urban planning and urban design at the TU Berlin. Afterwards research associate at the Department of Urbanism and Habitat of the TU Berlin, associate and partner of the Freie Planungsgruppe Berlin, co-founder of and partner at conradi, braum & bockhorst, later own office (mbup_stadtarchitekturlandschaft). Since 1998 full professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Landscape of the Leibniz University Hannover. Member of the Association of German Architects (BDA), the German Academy for Urban Development and Regional Planning (DASL) and the Association of Town, Regional and State Planning (SRL). Numerous publications on topics of urban planning and building culture (for example, 2017 »Die Wissensstadt von morgen – Reflexionen«). From 2008 to 2013 development and chairmanship of the Bundesstiftung Baukultur. Since 2016 Michael Braum has been a member of the Convention and the Advisory Council of the Bundesstiftung Baukultur, since 2017 a member of the large Convention of the Schaderstiftung.

Karoline Becker, Project Manager

She grew up in Heidelberg and studied architecture at the Peter Behrens School of Arts (PBSA) in Düsseldorf. Until 2000 she worked as an assistant in the design department of the PBSA and as a freelancer in architectural offices. Afterwards she worked as an architect in the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merill (Chicago/London). After returning to Heidelberg, she became a freelance architect and artist. She has been part of the IBA Heidelberg team since 2020.

Moritz Bellers, Project Manager

Studied Landscape and Environmental Planning at the University of Hanover, as well as Landscape Architecture at the University of Wageningen WUR in the Netherlands. He worked for Urbane Gestalt, landscape architects in Cologne from 2009 to 2011. He has been a research associate at the Institute for Landscape Planning and Ecology at the University of Stuttgart since July 2010. Since 2011, he has been a member of the Baubotanik (IGMA) research group at the University of Stuttgart, as well as actively working for STUDIO URBANE LANDSCHAFTEN since 2013. The STUDIO is a trans-disciplinary network for work on the perception, design and planning of urban landscapes at the university, in planning offices and as freelancer.

Ulrike Brauer, Administration

Studied business administration at the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University in Mannheim, specializing in public economy. Since 2001 she has been working for the city of Heidelberg, with positions in the finance department and the audit office. Since December 2019 she is responsible for administration at IBA Heidelberg.

Dr. Dorothea Deschermeier, Curator IBA Finale

Studied art history at the LMU Munich and the HU Berlin. 2004 to 2007 doctoral studies at the University of Bologna with a thesis on the corporate architecture of the energy company ENI. From 2008 to 2010 scientific traineeship at the German Architecture Museum (DAM) Frankfurt am Main and curator of the exhibition »Agip. The Filling Station of the Economic Miracle«. From 2010 to 2016 post-doc and research associate at the Accademia di architettura (USI-AAM) in Mendrisio in the inter-university project »Critical Encylopedia of Restoration and Reuse of XXth Century Architecture« under the direction of Prof. Bruno Reichlin. Since then freelance editor, curator and translator in the field of 20th century architecture and heritage conservation.

Carla Jung-König, Project Manager

Carla Jung-König studied landscape architecture and environmental policy at Leibniz University Hannover and University College Dublin. She then completed her European Master in Territorial Development at TU Braunschweig, UWE Bristol and Leibniz Universität Hannover. During her studies and afterwards, she worked in scientific policy consulting on questions of European funding policy, digitalisation and the future of work. She has also gathered experience in urban land-use planning, rural development and regional management in Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony.

Kristina Kallus, Communications, Project assistance

Studied Geography (with focus on Urban Geography) and German language and literature at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg, and Urban Planning as a minor at the University of Stuttgart. During her studies, she worked for the Chair of Human Geography and gained experience in an architectural office. Since 2017 she has been working at IBA Heidelberg mainly in communications/PR and besides as project assistant, especially for PHV.

Angela Kratz, Leitung Kommunikation

Studium der Kommunikation an der Universität Straßburg. Im Anschluss Magisterstudium der Publizistik, Romanistik und Betriebswirtschaftslehre (BWL) an den Universitäten Münster und Mainz. Währenddessen Redaktion in verschiedenen Kreativagenturen in Frankreich und Deutschland. Nach dem Studium war sie zunächst als Lektorin für Fiction beim Fernsehsender RTL tätig, bevor sie als Redakteurin für das Frankfurter Gestaltungsstudio Atelier Markgraph aktiv wurde. Von 2003 bis 2019 leitete Angela Kratz dort den Bereich PR/Unternehmenskommunikation und spezialisierte sich auf die Kommunikation von Architektur und Design. Ihre Arbeiten wurden mit mehreren Awards ausgezeichnet, darunter dem britischen Design & Art Direction Award (D&AD) und dem Red Dot Design Award. 

Emilia Kühn, Project assistance

Studied architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt with stays abroad in Copenhagen and Porto. After working as a student trainee in an architectural office during her studies, she immersed herself in urban planning, worked in the field of »Urban Health Games« and wrote her master's thesis in »Design and Urban Development«.

Djamila Rerbal, Secretary

Commercial expert, 22 years experience in sales and distribution, C. Josef Lamy GmbH. She most recently worked for Healthcare at Home in the international customer care department. Native speaker French and alongside German also speaks English and Arabic.

Felix Wohlfarth, Project Manager

Studied architecture at Bauhaus University Weimar. From 2007 to 2010 he worked for SCHWARZARCHITEKTUR Heidelberg owith focus on the development of existing buildings. From 2010 to 2017, he worked as Senior Project Manager at LUWOGE consult Gmbh in regional, European and international consulting projects on energy efficiency and sustainability issues,as well as in the field of project development and project planning in the Rhein-Neckar district and regional environment.

Anne von Holst, Free Project Support | Communication IBA Final

Studied architecture at Leibniz University Hannover and ETSA Barcelona. For 20 years she has been working in strategic communication, process support, moderation and mediation of socially relevant topics with a focus on construction, architecture and urban development. From 2000 to 2008, she worked for internationally operating planning offices in Berlin, Düsseldorf and Barcelona. From 2009 to 2019, Anneke von Holst was a press and public relations officer and project manager for the Bundesstiftung Baukultur. Since 2019 she offers communication & concepts for architecture and city as a freelance consultant in cooperation with institutions, municipalities, planning offices, agencies and actors of building culture.

Carl Zillich, Curatorial Director, Commissioner (until 1/2022)

Studied architecture and urban planning at the University of Kassel and, on a DAAD scholarship, at Columbia University, New York. From 2002 to 2008 he was assistant professor for architectural history and theory at Leibniz University in Hannover. Following until 2013 senior researcher at Germany's Federal Foundation for Baukultur. For many years practicing architect in Berlin (amongst others awarded a state price for architecture in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), since 2012 associate member of the Association of German Architects (BDA). Since 2015 appointed member of the architectural advisory board of the city of Oldenburg. Visiting professor for urban development at the University of Kassel in 2018/19. Acting as juror, speaker and moderator in Europe and North America. Numerous publications on architecture and Baukultur.

Advisory Board

The IBA team receives expert advice from an internationally renowned board of trustees. The Board of Trustees is composed of experts from the fields such as architecture, urban planning, science, education or economics.

Enrico Borgarello, Research & Development Director, HeidelbergCement Group

Enrico Borgarello studied Chemistry at the University of Torino. 1980 to 1986 he was Research Associate at the EPF Lausanne and University of Montreal and worked on the application of photocatalysis to the production of hydrogen and to the degradation of water pollutants. He then was 19 years at Eni Research as R&D Manager and was also appointed Senior Scientist. Since 2005 he has been Director of Research & Development and Central Laboratories at the Italcementi Group, in 2010 he was appointed Director of the Innovation Department. Under his leadership some of the most innovative applications regarding building materials were developed. Since the acquisition by HeidelbergCement Group of Italcementi in July 2016 he was appointed Global Product Innovation Director.

Klaus Elliger, Architect and Urban Planner, Head of Urban Planning, City of Mannheim

Klaus Elliger studied architecture in Karlsruhe, Vienna and Delft. He worked as building construction architect in various architecture offices, from 1988 to 1990 for the Deutsche Bundespost. From 1990 to 2008 he was responsible for the design of public space in the city planning department of Karlsruhe; first as a planner, later as a division manager. Since 1997 he has been a member of the Working Committee on Road Design at the German Research Association for Roads and Transportation, since 2015 its director. From 2001 to 2004, Klaus Elliger held a lectureship at the Urban Design Institute of the University of Karlsruhe. Since January 2008 he is head of the Department of Urban Planning of the City of Mannheim.

Annette Friedrich*, Urban Planner, Head of Urban Planning, City of Heidelberg 

Annette Friedrich grew up in Berlin and studied Architecture at the State University for Architecture in St Petersburg. Up until 2003, she worked in the Dresden’s Department of Urban Planning, holding the position of Head of Department for Binding Urban Land Use and Urban Design, as well as being Deputy Head of Office. Since 2004, Annette Friedrich has been Head of the Heidelberg City Planning Dept. and has decisively contributed towards the set up of the IBA in this role. She teaches at the Technical University of Dresden and the University of Applied Sciences in Heidelberg. She is a member of the Association of German City Planners DASL, as well as of numerous juries and selection panels, among them the jury of the German Urban Design Award 2008-10. She has published numerous articles on architecture and urban planning.

Prof. Undine Giseke, Landscape Architect, Technical University of Berlin

Undine Giseke studied Landscape Planning and Landscape Architecture at the Technical University of Berlin. She is co-owner of the landscape planning office bgmr. Her work encompasses projects such as the educational landscape at the Klievesberg in Wolfsburg, the urban space and compensation concept for the Science Park Berlin Johannisthal/Adlershof, as well as the campus of the Technical University of Berlin at the Landwehrkanal, receiving numerous awards. Alongside her practical work, she has been focusing on the contemporary phenomena of landscape development both nationally and internationally since her appointment at the Technical University of Berlin. She plays a decisive role in the conceptualization of contemporary landscape concepts, for example in form of urban gardening. She has headed up the specialist landscape architecture and free space planning unit at the Technical University of Berlin since 2003. She is a member of various advisory boards, such as the preparatory board of the IBA Heidelberg.

Prof. Ernst Hubeli, Urban Planner, Technical University of Graz

Ernst Hubeli studied Urban Planning and Architecture. He is the owner of Herczog Hubeli GmbH in Zurich, which has been dealing with buildings and project at the interfaces of urbanism, architecture and cultural politics for many years. He was chief editor of the renowned Swiss architecture magazine »werk, bauen, wohnen« from 1982 to 2000, and was then head of the Institute of Urbanism at the Technical University of Graz, where he researched future urban scenarios in the »Field of Excellence« within new growth limits. His internationally known projects are, for example, the design plan for the entire Sulzer-Escher-Wyss area in Zurich west as well as the concept for converting the Toni area into multipurpose usage including a higher education institution. In addition, Ernst Hubeli is researching the foundations of urban development and in this context is dealing with the phenomenon of the changing European city. He has been examining the architecture of educational buildings in collaboration with the Montag Foundation in Cologne for many years.

Dr. Karl-Heinz Imhäuser, Chairman of Carl Richard Montag Förderstiftung, Bonn

Dr. Karl-Heinz Imhäuser is Chairman of the non profit foundation Carl Richard Montag Förderstiftung, Bonn. Driven by an inclusive approach, the foundation’s aim is to create a fair access to society and its common spaces. Karl-Heinz Imhäuser taught at special schools as well as comprehensive and secondary schools for 20 years. Alongside his academic research and lecturing at tertiary institutions and state institutes he also trained as a Feldenkrais instructor and coach in »self-organized learning«. He is co-editor of the »Inklusive Pädagogik« series published by Beltz Verlag and a member of the »Inclusive Education« committee of experts at the Deutsche UNESCO-Kommission e. V. Bonn.

Dr. Verena Konrad, Director of Vorarlberger Architektur Institut, Dornbirn

Verena Konrad studied history, theology and art history at LFU Innsbruck. With a thesis on Max Bill and his furniture designs, she earned the title Magistra of Philosophy in Art History. She then completed her Doctorate in Philosophy researching the field of »Raum und Negativität« (Space and Negativity). She was curator of the Kunsthalle Wien and taught at the Institute of Architectural Theory, History and Heritage Preservation in Innsbruck. Since 2013 she has been Director of the Vorarlberg Architektur Institut. In 2018 she was Commissioner and Curator of the Austrian Contribution to the Architecture Biennale in Venice, and will be a member of the jury for the Swiss and Austrian contributions in 2020.

Prof. Dr. Ulf Matthiesen, Urban Ethnologist, Humboldt University of Berlin

Ulf Matthiesen is an ethnologist. He studied Sociology, Philosophy and Law in Freiburg, Frankfurt and Paris. He works at the Institute for European Ethnology at the Humboldt University of Berlin. His primary research focus is on interdependencies between knowledge, science and city regions, and secondly, he also examines the inner logic of big-city cultures and social environments in the context of innovative spatial pioneer networks from a comparative perspective. The IBA Heidelberg commissioned him to prepare »modules for a memorandum« together with Professor Ingrid Breckner and Professor Klaus R. Kunzmann. With this basic research in preparation of IBA HEIDELBERG »KNOWLEDGE CITY«, he outlined strategies and perspectives for Heidelberg’s further development as a European knowledge city.

Bernd Müller*, Architect, Construction Director, Office for Property and Construction Baden-Württemberg, Department Mannheim und Heidelberg

After studying Architecture at the University of Karlsruhe, Bernd Müller worked for the University of Heidelberg’s Municipal Building Dept. until 2004. As Executive Director for the State Construction Office Heidelberg, he was then responsible for the former barracks site in Mannheim and Heidelberg, before becoming the Director of the Baden-Wuerttemberg Office for Property and Construction, Mannheim Office. Since the merger with the University of Heidelberg’s construction office in July 2015, he is now director of the new Baden-Wuerttemberg Office for Property and Construction, Mannheim & Heidelberg Office. Since 2007, he has also held the position of deputy expert judge in the realization competition »New build: student residence in the Neuenheimer Feld Heidelberg«, »Urban development reorganization and housing development for Altklinikum Heidelberg« and »New build student residences Klausenpfad, Heidelberg«. He is also active as a writer and speaker, lecturing, for example, in China, Argentina and Chile. He is the initiator and organiser of the »Heidelberger Castle Discussions – Talking about Architecture« in the Heidelberg Castle.

Volker Nürk, Executive Headmaster, Heidelberg Grammar Scools

Studied mathematics and physics for the teaching profession at the universities of Constance and Heidelberg. From 2001 to 2015 teacher for mathematics, physics, NwT and astronomy at the Gymnasium Walldorf. Expert advisor for physics of the Regierungspräsidium Karlsruhe from 2005 to 2015 for the area of advanced training for teachers and activities of school supervision as well as commissioner for radiation protection. Since 2015 principal at Bunsen-Gymnasium Heidelberg and since 2019 executive principal of the Heidelberg grammar schools.

Prof. Jochen Rabe, Einstein Center Digital Future Berlin

Jochen Rabe studied architecture and urban planning at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, as well as at HFBK Hamburg. From 1994 to 2004 he headed the practice Raven & Partner Urban & Landscape Planning in Hamburg. In 2007 he became a senior manager at the engineering companies OfficeHappoldBerlin and Arup in Bristol, London. Since 2016 he has been Professor for Urban Resilience and Digitalisation at the Einstein Center Digital Future of TU Berlin. His research focuses on the transformation of our cities through digitalisation and the research of digital strategies to foster urban resilience. He is a member of numerous expert commissions and expert panels with a focus on Smart Cities.

Prof. Dr. Stephan Rammler, Institute for Futures Studies and Technology Assessment, Berlin

Stephan Rammler studied political and social sciences, and economics in Marburg and Berlin. He received his doctorate on »Mobility in the modern age« from Berlin Social Science Center. Since October 2018 he has been the scientific director of the Institute for Futures Studies and Technology Assessment(IZT) in Berlin, where he researches the connection between digitalisation and sustainability. In 2002, he was appointed to HBK Braunschweig, where he founded the Institut für Transportation Design (ITD) in 2007. In 2016, he was awarded the ZEIT WISSEN-Preis »Mut zur Nachhaltigkeit« (Courage to Sustainability) for his work on environmentally friendly locomotion. His latest polemic paper »Volk ohne Wagen« (people without a car) was published in 2017.

Christian Scherf*, Founding Chancellor Berufliche Hochschule Hamburg

Christian Scherf studied law and European law in Freiburg, Dijon (FR) and Frankfurt. He has worked in Brussels for the EU Commission as well as in the Free Hanseatic City of Hamburg as Personal Advisor to the Senator for Finance, and later as Head of Division for supra-regional education, science and research funding in the tax authorities. From 2000 he was Commercial Director of GKSS Forschungszentrum Geesthacht GmbH, from 2002 Administrative Director and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY). Since 2015 he has been Administrative Director of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg.

Prof. Volker Staab, Architect, Technical University of Braunschweig, Berlin

Volker Staab studied Architecture at the ETH Zurich. He worked for Bangert, Jansen, Scholz and Schultes in Berlin between 1985 and 1990. In 1991, he founded the architecture office Volker Staab. Following several professorships, among others, in Münster and Berlin, since 2012 he has taught and researched at the Technical University of Braunschweig. He is a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, as well as a board member of the Federal Foundation for Building Culture in Potsdam. The main focus of his work lies on the conversion and new construction of museums (e.g. New Museum Nuremberg and the Albertinum in Dresden) and on educational institutions (e.g. The German International School in Sydney), research and laboratory buildings, for example, for the Universities of Augsburg, Darmstadt, Potsdam, Rostock, Heidelberg, the Humboldt University of Berlin, as well as the Frauenhofer and Max Planck Institutes.

Prof. Dr. Silke Steets, Sociologist, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg

Silke Steets studied Sociology, Philosophy and Economics in Frankfurt/Main and St. Louis. Following her studies, she participated in the post graduate project »Event City« held by the Foundation Bauhaus Dessau and then moved to the Technical University of Darmstadt in 2002, where she completed her doctorate in 2007 and professorship in 2013. From 2013 to 2015 she was acting professor for Urban and Spatial Sociology at the Technical University of Darmstadt. Silke Steets was a DFG Heisenberg scholar at the Institute of Cultural Studies of the University of Leipzig. She has been a professor of sociological theory at the University of Erlangen since September 2019. In the last few years, her research activities have focused on the development of an architectural theory on the sociology of knowledge: the results were published by Surhkamp Verlag as »Der sinnhafte Aufbau der gebauten Welt« in spring of 2015. Her further interests lie with the interface of city, space, pop culture and art in the public space.

Supervisory Board

IBA is funded by the City of Heidelberg. Chairman of the Supervisory Board is First Deputy Mayor Jürgen Odszuck. The Supervisory Board oversees the management, nominates projects and awards the IBA label.
